The Dang Street and Commercial Dance Syllabus has been developed by a series of leading industry creatives to provide opportunities to learn and engage with the rich and diverse range of dance styles that embody this genre.
Aware that the industry is in constant evolution, the syllabus material has been designed to remain relevant and yet be updated easily as new trends emerge.
The Street and Commercial Syllabus has now officially launched and is awarded by RSL Awards Ltd and regulated by Ofqual. It provides a unique progressive training structure in a range of genres encompassed within the Street and Commercial style. The syllabus will provide a safe and structured pathway for students to gain the necessary technical and performance skills to become a well-rounded, versatile and confident performer with opportunities to develop creative skills and individuality. The work is designed to prepare students for college auditions and professional employment.
The main core styles of the syllabus are Hip Hop and Commercial. Unique to the Dang syllabus is the opportunity for dancers to specialise in Locking, Breaking, House and Popping in each grade through a series of progressive drills which develop the necessary vocabulary.

Candidates are assessed through four components:
The solo graded examinations consist of a series of warm-up activities, drills and variations with a Hip-Hop and Commercial base.
Students opt to specialise in additional styles: Popping, Locking, House and Breaking. In grades 1 to 3 they will choose ONE of these, in grades 5 to 8 they will choose TWO of these styles.
Each grade has a variety of choreographic tasks and opportunities to freestyle.
All information is provided in the syllabus book which breaks down the activities for every grade.
Much of the material has been choreographed for each grade. All of the set material is available on the instructional videos where a team of choreographers and teachers take you through the counts and detail of the set drills and variations.
The music for this syllabus was specifically produced by Danilo Jr Walde (DJ) who is the musical direction for Zoonation: The Kate Prince Company.
Each style within the syllabus has music specifically created to help as a teaching aid. It’s recommended that you use the music created, however in the freestyle and choreographic elements, you can use the music that best suits the dancers, as long as it’s within the correct genre/style.
As the grades develop the complexity of the choreography and content increases allowing the dancers to build a comprehensive vocabulary. As students are able to opt to perform in differing styles, they must always have knowledge of the previous vocabulary from any earlier grades. The drills are aimed at introducing students to the foundations of varying styles of Street and Commercial dance to help nurture the development and growth of the styles within the syllabus.
Teachers must be registered with the Dang Theatre and Dance Syllabus and be associated with at least 1 registered centre. Upon successful registration teachers will be able purchase the syllabus as part of package that contains: the syllabus book, music for each grade and the tutorial videos. These will be accessed via a private log-in that will be provided.
